2008 Carneros Late-Harvest Merlot "Port"*These are the same grapes for our excellent, award-winning, Moon Merlots. Jim was able to keep these grapes on the vines until they were basically just raisins. Luckily for us, the rains came late this year and we didn't get much rot. After destemming and adding some 08 Moon Merlot to the must, the grapes began to rehydrate. We pressed after two months of cold soaking and a very long, cool, fermentation raised the alcohol to levels where the yeast died. Grape grower Jim Moon has been growing grapes (under Helen Turley's guidance) since the 80s. * - We can't call it Port anymore, since the US and the EU have a treaty in place now to protect named regions and styles, like Port, Champagne, Bordeaux, Chianti, etc. I guess we'll be call our wine made in the "Port-style" something boring like desert wine. |
