2004 Late Harvest Zinfandel Port*

This interesting port is made from a very late harvest Zinfandel from San Miguel.  This is not your usual port.  It's not too sweet and has wonderful raisin tastes characteristic of a late harvest Zinfandel.

History

  • Harvested on September 10, 2004, we crushed 1.5 tons of very warm grapes (80 degrees).   The brix of the grapes was 28, and more than 50% of them were raisins.  Because the raisins passed straight through the destemmer-crusher the sugars in the raisins were not available to the yeast for a very long time and the fermentation ran very long.
  • Pressed September 29, 2004.
  • Still in the barrel

* - We can't call it Port anymore, since the US and the EU have a treaty in place now to protect named regions and styles, like Port, Champagne, Bordeaux, Chianti, etc.  I guess we'll be call our wine made in the "Port-style" something boring like desert wine.
